Lesson Plan of Accepting and Declining Invitations in English language

Grade V

Students` Learning Outcomes

 

  • Write replies accepting or declining an invitation.

Information for Teachers

  • In the invitations, the following points are considered:
  • Purpose of writing
  • Date & Time of that party/function
  • Venue of that party
  • Name of addressee and sender i.e. students have to write their own name and of the addressee.
  • Form of addressing elders: as; Mr., Mrs, Miss, and Ms. Etc.
  • Proper nouns start with capital letters; write the names, places, days, moths with capital letters. For example, Ayesha, Ali, Iqbal Town, Saturday, February, etc.
  • To decline the invitation means that you can`t attend the party due to some reason.

Accepting & declining Invitations

  • While teaching the lesson, consult textbook too.

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk/marker, duster, textbook

Introduction

  • Recap the last lesson and ask the students to tell, as;
  1.      What invitations are?
  2. Why are invitations written /sent?
  3. Why is it important to respond to an invitation?

Accepting & declining Invitations

  • (Because it is polite to reply to an invitation if the host knows how many people are coming they can arrange for food and seating accordingly).

Development

Activity 1

  • Write the following template on the writing board and ask the students to copy it.
  • Ask the students to read the invitations they have written in the previous /last lesson as on ‘birthday party invitation’ and on ‘brother`s sister`s wedding’.
  • Tell the students to write a short note for telling their friends that they are very happy to get the invitation of his/her birthday party or brother`s /sister`s wedding and they will join him/her on that occasion.
  • Tell the students to, as;
  1. Thank their friend for the invitation.
  2. Say you would love to come.
  3. Tell you will come and join them.
  • Monitor and help the students.
  • Once they have done, ask them to exchange and check each other`s work and give feedback.
  • Tell the students to write the second draft in the light of the feedback given by their peers.

Activity 2

  • Once the students have done the above activity, ask them to think of reason for not being able to go.
  • Ask why they should write a note even if they can`t go. Explain the importance of being polite.
  • Write a note for declining the invitation by using the following template.
  • Tell the students to write a reply using these ideas:
  • Thank your friend for the invitation.
  • Say you would love to come but you can`t and give the reason for that.
  • Remember to mention the reason briefly.
  • Tell when you will visit them after the wedding or the occasion.

Sum up / Conclusion

  • To sum up the lesson, tell the answers to the following questions yourself or ask the students to tell their answers, as;
  1. What should be written in an accepting invitation note?
  2. Why is it important to write an acceptance of invitation note?
  3. Why should we write a declining note?
  4. What should be written in a declining note?

Assessment

  • Ask the students to exchange and read each other`s work and give feedback.
  • Tell the students to write the second draft in the light of the feedback given by their peers group.
  • Involve the students in solving problems related to accepting or declining invitations given in exercise of the textbook

Follow up

  • Ask the students to write an accepting or declining note to their friends’ invitation on a party to celebrate success in final exam.
