- Change part of speech of a given word.
Information for Teachers
- Parts of speech include noun, pronoun, verb, adverb, preposition, adjective, interjection, conjunction. By using different parts of speech, sentences are formed. We speak and write sentences which have various parts of speech, as;
- Sara (noun) walks (verb) proudly (adverb).
- Amana (noun) drives (verb) carefully (adverb).
- The pigeon (noun) flies (verb) swiftly (adverb).
- A Noun is a word used as the name of a person, place, or things, as;
– Akbar was a great king.
-Islam A bad is the capital of Pakistan.
-This chair is made of wood.
- An Adjective is a word used to add something to the meaning of nouns, as;
-Rashid is an intelligent boy.
- A Pronoun is a word used instead of a noun, as;
– Ali is absent, because he is ill.
- A Verb is a word used to say something about something about some person, place, or thing, as;
-The girl wrote a letter to her cousin.
- An Adverb is a word used to add something to the meaning of a verb, an adjective, or another adverb, as;
-He solved the sum quickly.
- A Preposition is a word used with a noun or a pronoun to show how the person or thing denoted by the noun or pronoun stands in relation to something else, as;
-There is a cow in the garden.
- A Conjunction is a word used to join words or sentences, as;
-Two and two make four.
- An Interjection is a word which expresses some sudden feeling, as;
-Hurrah! We have won the match.
Material / Resources
Writing board, chalk/ marker, duster, textbook, chart paper
Introduction
- Ask the students what are verbs, adverbs, adjectives and nouns.
- After taking their feedback, display a chart paper on the writing board (definitions of verb, noun, adverb, and adjective written on it). Keep it as a permanent resource in the class.
- Tell the students that verbs, adverbs, adjectives and nouns can change class by changing or adding a few letters of alphabet.
- Ask them if someone is walking in a proud way we can say that, as;
– He/she is walking _________proudly).
- If someone solves a sum in a clever way, as;
– He is working __________ (cleverly).
- If someone speaks in an angry tone, as;
– He/she speaks __________ (angrily).
- Ask the students to change these adjectives into adverbs, as;
– (Proud, clever, slow, angry, and heavy)
Development
Activity 1
- Display a chart paper on the writing board having some nouns written on it.
- Ask them to change these nouns into adjectives.
- Write their answers in the parallel column. Ask them to use the given nouns and adjectives in their sentences orally.
- Adjectives are filled for the support of teachers.

- If students require, help them in sentence construction.
- This activity will be done in the notebooks, as;
– A prince who has beauty (noun) is a beautiful (adjective) princess.
– A dog that shows laziness (noun) is a lazy (adjective) dog.
Activity 2
- There are some root words which go on to become nouns or verbs, as;
- If Uzma is performing (verb) on stage, Now we can say that ‘Uzma is giving a performance (Noun).
- The root word stays the same, and we can change a verb to a noun or a noun to a verb by adding or taking away a few letters of alphabet.
- Write down the following sentences on the writing board.
- Tell the students that we can change verbs to nouns by adding the suffixes, as ‘tion’, ‘ism’, ‘ness’, ‘ist’, or ‘ity’.
- Ask the students in turns to read a sentence and make nouns from the given verbs, as;
- If you are responsible, you show________________
- When you are happy, you are full of_____________
- When something is reduced in price, it is a price__________
- When you do something foolish, you are showing_________
- If you are kind to someone, you are showing_____________
- Expected responses are as; 1. Responsibility, 2 Happiness, 3 Reductions, 4.Foolishness, 5. Kindness
Sum up / Conclusion
- Ask the students:
- What are nouns, adverbs and adjectives?
- Ask and give examples of different nouns that can be changed into adjectives and verbs into nouns.
- Find the exercise related to the topic in the textbook.
- Students must do this exercise in the notebook or on the textbook.
Assessment
- Ask the students to write a short story by using the following adjectives, nouns, adverbs and verbs, as; forest, thick, young, dark, boy, live, woods, cut, attack, lion, bravely, at once.
- Check to see if students are using the words properly.
Follow up
- Use the word bank to write a paragraph containing five sentences, as;
