Students` Learning Outcomes

  • Use simple present tense for habitual actions and for timeless and universal statements.

Information for Teachers

  • Simple present tense is used to describe a routine or habits.
  • Simple present tense is also used to describe a universal happening or truth.
  • Use of first form of verb, if he, she, it or one person is doing the action; add ‘s’ or ‘es’ with the base form or first form of the verb.
            1. He goes to school.
            2. She watches cartoon.
            3. The cat drinks milk.

Simple Present Tense

  • Verbs ending with ‘s’, ‘sh’, ‘ch’, ‘o’, ‘ss’ take ‘es’ at the end.
  • For example;
          • Watch change into watches
          • Go change into goes
          • Teach change into teaches
          • Brush change into brushes, etc.

Simple Present Tense

  • The things which are universally correct also come under simple present tense.
  • For example;
      • Facts
      • Habits
      • Routines, etc.
      1. The sun rises in the east.
      2. I wake up at 9 o1clock.
      3. Smoking damages our health.
  • While teaching the lesson, the teacher should also consult the textbook where needed.

Introduction

  • First tell your daily routine to the students in simple sentences.
  • For example:
    • I go to school.
    • I teach students.
    • I come home. Etc. img
  • Then ask the students to tell their daily routine, (up to 3 sentences from each).
  • Write his or her responses on the board.
  • Correct him/her where needed.
  • Now ask the students to retell their daily routine.

Activity 1

  1. Tell them to use simple present tense

O > When the action takes place regularly (habit or routine)

  • Ask one example of habit or routine from the students giving them the following help.
  • Example:

O > I go to school > routine.

O > She drinks tea > Habit

O > He works in a factory > Routine

O > Ahmad likes biscuits > Habit

  1. When you are talking about universal truth/facts.
    • The sun rises in the east.
    • The earth revolves around the sun.

  • Tell the students that it is the subject which decide the use of letter‘s’ or ‘es’, with the verb.
  • Show them the following table to clarify which subject takes only first form of the verb and which subject takes ‘s’ or ‘es’ with the first form of the verb.

Activity 3

  • Ask the students to sit in groups of four. Consider students sitting on one desk as a group.
  • Tel them to write four to five sentences about their daily routine after discussing it with each other.
  • Please take oral feedback.

Activity 4

  • Write the subject which take verbs without letter‘s’ or ‘es’ with the verb, on the board.
  • Ask students to tell about the daily routine of their brother, sister, friend etc.
  • Ask them to work in pairs.
  • Give them five sentences and ask them to choose the correct form of the verb.
  • For example:
      • Ali (come/comes) to school on time.
      • He (like/likes) oranges.
      • I (brush/brushes) my teeth.
      • We (wash/washes) dishes.
      • She (teach/teaches) us English.
  • Today we have learnt about simple present tense and how it is used.
  • Ask them to share what they know about healthy and junk food to demonstrate the use of the tense.
  • For example:
      • Soda drinks are bad for our health.
      • Apples are good for our eyesight.

Assessment

  • Give them five sentences and ask them to choose the correct form of verb.
      1. Ayesha play/plays badminton.
      2. I eats/eat apples at noon.
      3. He goes/go to school.
      4. They walks/walk home.
      5. We makes/make candles.

Follow up

  • Ask them to write a paragraph about how they play with their brother, sister, cousins or neighbors.
  • For example:
  • My sister and I play every day. I pretend to be the teacher and she becomes the student. I give her work. Sometimes she fights because she wants to be the teacher too. We have a lot of fun.
