Information for Teachers
· What is a story: An account of imaginary or real people “an adventure story” a report of an item of news in a newspaper, magazine, or broadcast and events told for entertainment are called story.

· Elements of story: A story has five basic but important elements. These five components are: the characters, the setting, the plot, the conflict, and the resolution. These essential elements keep the story running smoothly and allow the action to develop in a logical way that the reader can follow.
· A story is narrative writing. The characters are Centre of all action. The setting tells where and when the story takes place.
· There is always a problem in a story (meaning the basic reason to write a story) and finally a solution to the problem is found towards the end of the story.
· Every story has a beginning, middle and end.
· While teaching the lesson, the teacher should also consult textbook at all steps where and when applicable.
Material / Resources
Chalk/marker, board, duster, notebooks, pencils
Worm up activity
· Review the previous lessons about the basic elements of a story. Write the elements in a template from on the board
· Ask how many students have read stories in last week. Encourage all students to read stories from magazines and children’s newspapers.
Development
Activity 1
· Ask a student to relate a story he/she has read recently.
· Ask the students about the elements of the story narrated.
Activity 2
· Divide the class in small groups of 5-6 members each.
· Give each group one story beginning. For example:
o I knew something strange would happen that day.
o Sami and his sister Salma were alone at home one day.
o One day jimmy went out to get ice-cream. Uma was walking home from school when she saw it lying on the ground (students to decide what it was that she found.
· Students discuss a topic to write a story about. They must use all elements of story writing.
· Students must have characters in their story, mention where the story is taking place (setting), a beginning, middle and end. They can give a title to the story too.
Sum up / Conclusion
· Ask the representative from each group to read out their story.
· Appreciate or advise, as required.
· Display the story in class.
Assessment
· Assess students’ written work to know about their understanding and learning.
· You can give marks to each group’s stories on the basis of all elements used.
· Teacher is also required to involve the student in solving the problems given in the exercise at end of unit/chapter.
Follow up
· Students should make a story book and submit in a week’s time.
· Put up a chart in the classroom to record the reading record of the students.
