  • Recognize meaning of common adjectives and verbs in relation to each other.

Information for Teachers

  • Adjectives tell the qualities of noun for example big, short, small, black, white, etc.

Vocabulary Building

  • Action verbs shows actions e.g. sleep, walk, talk, jump, run, etc.

Vocabulary Building

  • Present participles are a present form of the verb. They are usually made by adding-ing to the infinitive.

  • Adding-ing to the infinitive follows the normal spelling rules.

  • Some present participles act as adjectives and are called verbal adjectives for example we went on a swimming camp, I am watching a cooking show, I went to the gaming zone, etc.

Introduction

  • Write the following words on the writing board and ask the students to tell what adjectives are and what are verbs? Big, wash, small, box, large, cook, etc.

Vocabulary Building

  • Ask them to use them in sentences to clarify meaning. Jot down a few sentences on the board.
  • When done with these words ask the students to come up with some more adjectives and words and the teacher will write them on the columns on the board.
  • Introduce the verbal adjectives to the students by using above information.

Development

Activity 1

  • Write the following verbs on the board and ask the students to copy.
  • Tell them to work in pairs and make verbal adjectives of these verbs.

Vocabulary Building

  • For example, run=running, stop=stopping, drive, cycle, try, swim, win, dry, fly, live, cry.
  • Once the students are done ask them randomly to tell the answers.
  • Tell the students to correct their work.
  • Take rounds and check students work.
  • Write the following sentences on the board and ask the students to copy.
  • Tell the students to work in pairs or small groups and circle the nouns and then underline the verbal adjectives that tell us something more about these nouns.
      1. This washing powder doesn`t clean clothes well.
      2. I am improving my swimming style.
      3. Don`t take your drinking water from that jug, it is not clean.
      4. I walked on the running track in the park.
      5. I was going on the cycling track in the evening with my brothers.
      6. I got a little toy sewing machine for my birthday.
  • Monitor and help the students.
  • Once the students are done, ask them randomly to tell the verbal adjectives.
  • Tell them to make corrections side by side.
  • Give your input where required.

Activity 2

  • Write the following words on the board and ask the students t write sentence that use these words as verbal adjectives.
      • Cooking (pan, stove, pot, class)
      • Shopping (list, bag, trip, mall)
      • Living (room, style)
      • Shaving (brush, cream)
      • Running (water, track, speed, shoes)
      • Gardening (gloves, tools, equipment)
  • Monitor and help the students.

Sum up / Conclusion

  • How can verbs be turned to adjectives?

  • Ask them to come up with some verbs and make verbal adjectives of them.

  • Once the students are done ask them to exchange and check each other`s work for verbal; adjectives and correct sentences.
  • Tell them to correct their work in the light of the feedback given by their peers.

  • Ask the students to find at least five sentences with phrasal adjectives from their books and write in their notebooks.
