Students` Learning Outcomes

  • Make anagrams from simple one syllable words.

Information for Teachers

  • A word or phrase spelled by rearranging the letters of another word or phrase is called an anagram e.g. bear=bare. Make sure that new words made make sense.

Anagrams

  • Single syllable words are short words which are spoken without breaking into smaller units. Each syllable has a vowel sound and consonant sound e.g. heat=single syllable, heat /er = double syllable (slash sign i.e. / indicates syllable division). Single syllable has only one vowel sound.

 Anagrams

  • Anagram is a form of vocabulary building game, used to increase the students` vocabulary. Students get motivation to learn longer words because they can make different words from one word.

 

  • This can be done as a fun activity throughout the term to give the students a break from their daily routine.

Anagrams

  • While teaching the lesson, the teacher should also consult the textbook where it is required.

 

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk / marker, duster, charts, textbook, paper

Introduction

  • First of all tell the students about the concept of syllable i.e. what is one syllable word? (Expected answer would be as; Single pronunciation having one vowel sound, with or without consonants surrounding, such as; ti-ger, pi-lot)
  • Then tell the students concept of anagrams.
  • Write a word on the board which is one syllable e.g. arm.
  • Ask the class to rearrange the spellings of the name and make another word i.e. ram, mar.
  • Do it with one syllable words from your class and let them enjoy making new words.

Activity 1

  • Write a one syllable word on the board in boxes and give numbering to each letter;

  • EARTH is a single syllable word and you have numbered each letter of it.
  • Now tell the students that they can re-arrange the letters of the given word to make a new one. Ask them to try making a new word.
  • If they are unable to do it, give them a hint, (e.g. the other word is the name of our body part.
  • Ask any student to come up to the board and write the word. If they are unable to do so, draw a picture of heart as a hint.
  • Call the student to fill in the boxes in the board, as;

  • Now tell them that this is an anagram of a single syllable word. Ask them to do it in the notebook with the picture of the earth and a heart so they remember the meanings and the concept.
  • Choose other single syllable words. Have each letter written on different colours. Ask the students to rearrange the papers to form the new word.

Activity 2

  • Tell the class that they will be playing a vocabulary building / word game.
  • Give then flashcards with following words written on the cards (one word per card).
  • Divide these flashcards in the class(one flash card per child). Now ask the students to find another student in the class who has the anagram of their word. One student at a time gets up and reads his or her word. The other child who has the same letters in different arrangement gets up and both cards are displayed on the board.
  • Carry on this game till all the words are matched with their respective anagram.
  • All pairs of students with anagram stand together then display the cards on the board.
  • Ask the students the meanings of these words and if they don`t know explain the meaning by using them in sentences. Try to use both the words in the same sentence. It can be quite interesting e.g. Dear Ali, please read the book. You may eat the apple; I ate mine sometime back etc.
  • Tell the students that an anagram uses all the letters of the word and after re-arrangement it makes a new word. All the new words must make sense.
  • Tell them that this game is important for them to improve their vocabulary.

Sum up / Conclusion

  • Ask the class to tell about anagrams and give examples.
  • Discuss how anagrams are helpful in learning saplings.

Assessment

  • Ask the class to find any 5 one syllable words from the textbook and make anagrams.

Follow up

  • Display a chart in the class for writing anagrams by the students (you can do it with pictures for better learning)
  • Ask the students to find more one syllable words which have anagrams from their textbook or any other book / magazine.
  • Ask them to write them down in their homework notebooks.
  • Help the students using both the anagrams in the same sentences.
