Subject Mathematics
Grade 2^{nd}
Students` Learning Outcomes
 Write ordinal numbers from first to twentieth.
Information for Teachers
 Ordinal numbers represent position of things with rest to their place for example first, second, third, Twentieth.
 Ordinal numbers are written like this 1^{st}, 2^{nd}, 3^{rd, },…………….20^{th}.
Material / Resources
Writing board, chalk / marker, duster, flash cards, chart, textbook
Introduction
 Ask the students who steed first in the previous class?
 Take their feedback and write on the board names of students along with their position.
Sara
1^{st}
Omar
2^{nd}
Ali
3^{rd}
 Ask students can we write their positions as one (1), two (2) and three (3) instead of 1^{st}, 2^{nd}, 3^{rd}? (Expected answer would be as; no)
 If not why so?
 Encourage them and explain that we use “ordinal numbers” to identify position.
 Ordinal numbers represent position of things, with respect to their place.
 Today we will learn more about these ordinal numbers.
Development
Activity 1
 Show the students car racing chart.
 Ask the students to observe the positions of cars with respect to their places in race.
 Tell the students that orange car is at 1^{st} position. (Expected answer would be as: first)
 The green colour car is at 2^{nd} position. (Expected answer would be as: second)
 Now keep telling them till 20^{th} position. (Expected answer would be as: third)
 The pink car is at 3rd position.
 1^{st}, 2^{nd}, 3^{rd}, up to 20th are ordinal numbers.
 Write on the board ordinal numbers up to twentieth in first column and in words like first, second, up to twentieth in the second column.
 Ask the students to read loudly.
 Guide them in learning the spellings.
Activity 2
 Write on the board ordinal numbers and words related to them.
1^{st}
Eighteen
6^{th}
Twentieth
8^{th}
Seventh
14^{th}
Twelfth
18^{th}
First
20^{th}
Eighth
11^{th}
Third
7^{th}
Fourteenth
12^{th}
Sixth
3rd
Eleventh
 Call the students one by one to the board.
 Ask them to match the ordinal number written in first column with the corresponding word in the second columns.
 Keep on matching the columns till last number and encourage the students.
Activity 3
 Write alphabets AT on the board.
 Ask the students to write these in their notebooks.
 Ask the students to fill in the boxes with ordinal numbers such as; 1^{st}, 2^{nd, 3rd …}2 0^{th} according to the position of each alphabet.
 Observe their work and guide the students.
Sum up / Conclusion
 Ordinal numbers are 1^{st}, 2^{nd}, 3^{rd} ……….. 20^{th}.
 In words we write ordinal numbers first, second, third …………… twentieth
Assessment
 Make the following table on the board and call the students one by one and ask them to write the corresponding ordinal number in front of the day.
Monday
Tuesday
Wednesday
Thursday
Friday
Saturday
Sunday
