Information for Teachers

  • Ordinal numbers represent position of things with rest to their place for example first, second, third, Twentieth.

 

  • Ordinal numbers are written like this 1st, 2nd, 3rd, ,…………….20th.

 

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk / marker, duster, flash cards, chart, textbook

Introduction

  • Ask the students who steed first in the previous class?
  • Take their feedback and write on the board names of students along with their position.

  • Ask students can we write their positions as one (1), two (2) and three (3) instead of 1st, 2nd, 3rd? (Expected answer would be as; no)
  •  If not why so?

 

 

  • Encourage them and explain that we use “ordinal numbers” to identify position.
  • Ordinal numbers represent position of things, with respect to their place.
  • Today we will learn more about these ordinal numbers.

Development

Activity 1

  • Show the students car racing chart.

 

  • Ask the students to observe the positions of cars with respect to their places in race.
  • Tell the students that orange car is at 1st position. (Expected answer would be as: first)
  • The green colour car is at 2nd position. (Expected answer would be as: second)
  • Now keep telling them till 20th position. (Expected answer would be as: third)
  • The pink car is at 3rd position.
  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd, up to 20th are ordinal numbers.
  • Write on the board ordinal numbers up to twentieth in first column and in words like first, second, up to twentieth in the second column.
  • Ask the students to read loudly.
  • Guide them in learning the spellings.

 

Activity 2

  • Write on the board ordinal numbers and words related to them.

  • Call the students one by one to the board.
  • Ask them to match the ordinal number written in first column with the corresponding word in the second columns.
  • Keep on matching the columns till last number and encourage the students.

Activity 3

  • Write alphabets A-T on the board.
  • Ask the students to write these in their notebooks.

 

  • Ask the students to fill in the boxes with ordinal numbers such as; 1st, 2nd, 3rd …2 0th according to the position of each alphabet.
  • Observe their work and guide the students.

 

Sum up / Conclusion

  • Ordinal numbers are 1st, 2nd, 3rd ……….. 20th.
  • In words we write ordinal numbers first, second, third …………… twentieth

Assessment

  • Make the following table on the board and call the students one by one and ask them to write the corresponding ordinal number in front of the day.

  • Make a poster of the months of year.
