Lesson Plan of Tense (Present/Past/Future)

Students` Learning Outcomes

  • Illustrate the use of tenses, (Simple present and continuous, simple past and continuous    and simple future tense) previously learnt in their speech and writing.

Information for teachers

  • In this lesson plan, only present and past continuous tenses are discussed. Rests of the tenses are discussed in separate lesson plans.
  • Present continuous tense is used for describing activities and for actions taking place at the time of speaking.

Positive = Subject + is/am/are (helping verb) +1st form of verb+ing+object, as; He is singing a song.

Negative = Subject + is/am/are (helping verb) +not +1st form of verb+ing+object, as; He is not singing a song.

Interrogative = is/am/are (helping verb) +Subject +1st form of verb+ing+object, as; I he singing a song?

 

  • Past continuous tense is used to describe the action which was happening at some time in the past. Past continuous tense is also called past progressive tense.

Positive =Subject + was/were (helping verb) +1st form of verb+ing+object, as; He was singing a song.

Negative = Subject + was/were (helping verb) +not +1st form of verb+ing+object, He was not singing a song.

Interrogative = was/were (helping verb) +Subject +1st form of verb+ing+object, as; Was he not singing a song?

 

 

  • While teaching the lesson, consult textbook at all steps wherein and whenever it is required.

 

Material / Resources

Writing board, chalk/marker, duster, textbook

Introduction

  • Tell the students that in this activity you (the teacher) will be acting/expressing an action without speaking.
  • Act out the situation given below without speaking.
  • The class has to guess the action.
  • Tell the students that they have to say a complete sentence, as;
  • You are watching a horror film.

Situation

·         You are washing clothes.

·         You dry your hands.

·         You dial a number.

·         You talk on the phone.

 

  • After every action ask students what you are doing?
  • Give situations to a few students one by one and ask them to act silently.
  • Tell the students that present continuous tense is used to describe actions that are happening when a person is speaking.
  • Teach students the formation of present continuous tense.

Development

Activity 1

  • Write the following sentences on the writing board. Ask students to fill in the gaps using the present continuous tense form.
  1. We _______ not ________ a book at the moment, (read)
  2. My father ________________ to the police officer, (talk)
  3. Ahmad and Ayesha ______ not ______ on the bus, (ride)
  4. The boys__________________ in the lake/pond, (Swim)
  5. We ___________________ table tennis right now, (play)
  6. Ahmed ____________________ on the computer, (work)

Activity 2

  • Ask students to write five sentences.
  • Ask them to go out of the class, note and write down whatever they see happening?
  • Encourage them to stand at different points in the school so that they write different sentences.as;
  1. A crow is flying in the sky.
  2. One teacher is walking in the ground.
  3. A chocolate wrapper is lying on the floor.

Activity 3

  • Divide the class into two teams.
  • Ask one student from each team to come forward. Tell one student to close eyes, or face the wall.
  • Show the other student an action verb like “playing cricket or hopscotch”.
  • The student silently acts out the action until you say FREEZE.
  • When you say FREEZE, the acting student will stop/freeze right there.
  • The student of other team can now open eyes and see the student.
  • The students guess what student was doing?
  • Ask the guessing student: as;
  1. What was he/she doing?
  • Ask student to guess and answer in a complete sentence, as;
  1. He was playing cricket or she was playing hopscotch.
  • Give the team one point for making a correct guess. Play the game for 10 minutes.
  • After the game, asks student: as;
  1. Why were we using a past tense ‘was’ in the questions and answers in the game?
  • Encourage students if they give right answer. Correct their responses if they give wrong answers.
  • Ask them: as;
  1. Why were we using ‘ing’ with verbs in the game?
  • Encourage students if they give right answer. Correct them if they give wrong answers.
  • Re-teach students the past continuous tense. Write some examples on the writing board.

Sum up/ Conclusion

  • Quickly repeat the use of present and past continuous tenses with the students. Ask students to give two examples of each tense.

Assessment

  • Write the following sentences on the writing board and ask the students to change them in present continuous tense.
  1. I watched a movie which was not interesting at all.
  2. Ali ran after the kitten.
  3. I get ready for school early in the morning.
  4. Ayesha laughed at Amir`s joke.
  5. Ahmed drives his father`s car without permission.
  • Give students present continuous sentences and ask them to change sentences and ask them to change into past continuous tense.
  • Involve the students in solving the problems given in the exercise at the end of unit/chapter of the textbook.

Follow up

  • Choose an activity/exercise from the textbook on past continuous tenses and ask the students to do it in their notebooks.
  • Give students ten words. Ask them to use five words in past continuous tense and five words in present continuous tense.
