Lesson Plan of Nouns from Environment

LESSON PLANNING OF USE OF NOUNS FROM IMMEDIATE AND EXTENDED ENVIRONMENT

Subject English

Grade 5th

Students` Learning Outcomes

  • Recall and demonstrate use of more common, countable and uncountable, collective nouns from immediate and extended environment.

Information for Teachers

  • Students have studied these types of nouns in Grade 3 and Grade 4. This lesson therefore is a revision of common, countable and uncountable, collective nouns.
  • Enhance students` vocabulary on types of nouns through the use of more nouns from immediate and outside the class environment; school, home, town, city, etc.
  • A noun can be countable or uncountable.
  • Definition of countable nouns: countable nouns can be counted; they have a singular and plural form.

Example:

  • A book, an apple, three tables, balls
  • Definition of uncountable nouns:

USE OF NOUNS FROM IMMEDIATE AND EXTENDED ENVIRONMENT

  • Uncountable nouns (also called mass nouns) can`t be counted. For example, we can`t count “milk”. We can count “bottles of milk” or “liters of milk”, but we can`t count “milk” itself.
  • Examples: Music, art, love, happiness, advice, information, news, furniture, luggage, rice, sugar, butter, water, electricity, gas, power, money, currency.
  • Uncountable nouns usually don`t have a plural form. They are used with a singular verb, we can`t say sugars, music, knowledge, etc.

Examples: I have some news for you. This information is very useful.

  • We can`t use ‘a/an’ with these nouns to express a quantity of uncountable nouns, we use a word or expression like : some, a lot of, a piece of, a bit of, a box of, a bar of, a bottle of , etc.
  • Common nouns are general names. They aren`t capitalized unless they begin a sentence.

Examples: country, chair, girl, boy, school, city.

  • Collective nouns are nouns that refer to things or people as a unit or group. Nouns that name a group of people, place or thing are called collective nouns.

  • While teaching the lesson, the teacher should also consult textbook at all steps where and when applicable.
